About Bosky Creative…

"Hi, I'm Alison Richards - the person behind Bosky Creative. I'm a surface pattern designer and creative health practitioner, bringing together my love of art, nature and wellbeing."

Where it began

I spent over two decades as a nurse, giving everything I had to caring for others. In 2019, after repeated burnout, I made the difficult decision to step away from the profession I had dedicated my life to.

What followed was a slow, quiet rediscovery of joy - through gardening, walking, and making things with my hands again. I returned to creativity without pressure or expectation, and somewhere in that process, something shifted. I learned to let go of perfection. I rediscovered what it felt like to make something purely for the pleasure of making it - not for productivity, not for outcome, just for the joy of the process itself.

That shift changed not just how I approach creativity, but how I approach life.

Why Bosky?

The name comes from an old English word meaning "abundant in trees or shrubs" - a nod to the shrubby woodland at the bottom of my garden, and a reflection of the nature-rooted work I create. I spend time most days walking in the woods and surrounding countryside with my dog, Barley, and I almost always come home with pockets full of natural treasure and plenty of inspiration.

“My eye is drawn to small seasonal details - ferns unfurling, lacey moss, shifting colours and textures. These moments of wonder find their way into everything I make.”

Most of my pattern designs begin outdoors - with hand-drawn sketches and doodles of plants and natural forms observed in my garden or on my walks. I develop these by hand, adding paint and colour or creating lino-cuts and printing blocks, before scanning the artwork and refining it digitally into seamless, repeating patterns in beautiful natural tones.

I trained as a gardener with the WFGA in 2020/21 and completed Bonnie Christine's Immersion programme in early 2025, becoming a certified surface pattern designer. My goal is to craft patterns for ethically made, sustainable products - pieces that feel good for the soul and the planet.

Wherever possible, I reuse and recycle. Thoughtful, sustainable practice runs through everything I do.

My design practice…

In a world shaped by constant screen use, uncertainty and competing demands, I believe hands-on, mindful creativity is more important than ever. Simple creative practices offer space to slow down, focus attention and reconnect - with ourselves and with each other.

This belief is rooted in my own experience. Creativity helped restore me. Drawing on both my nursing background and that lived experience, I now create safe, supportive spaces where people of all ages and abilities can explore making for pleasure, confidence and wellbeing -without pressure, judgement or any need to be "good at art."

My Creative Health Practice…

“I believe creativity lives within us all and to embrace it can have a profound impact on our health and wellbeing at any stage of life”
